Live View
Live View lets you monitor your cameras in real-time with flexible layouts, custom presets, and full PTZ control.

Accessing Live View
Click Live in the left sidebar to open your camera feeds. If you have multiple timelines, use the Select Timeline dropdown to choose which one to view.
Layout Selection
Choose how many cameras to display at once using the layout grid in the sidebar. Options range from a single fullscreen camera to multi-camera grids.
Available layouts:
- Single camera (fullscreen)
- 2x2 grid (4 cameras)
- 3x3 grid (9 cameras)
- And various asymmetric layouts
Each position in the layout has a camera dropdown - click it to assign any camera to that position.
Filtering Cameras
Use the tabs in the sidebar to filter which cameras appear:
- Presets - Load saved camera configurations (see Presets below)
- Site - View all cameras at a specific site
- TetherBox - View all cameras connected to a specific TetherBox
Presets
Save your favourite layouts and camera combinations as presets for quick access.
Creating a Preset
- Arrange your cameras in the desired layout
- Type a name in the New Preset Name field
- Click the + button to save
Cycle Presets
Automatically rotate between your saved presets at regular intervals - useful for monitoring stations.
- Toggle Cycle Presets to On
- Select the Interval (1 second to 5 minutes)
- TetherX will automatically switch between your presets
Quality Settings
Quality Toggle
The Quality toggle controls overall stream behaviour:
- Auto - Delivers smooth video by automatically switching between primary and secondary streams based on your connection speed
- Preview - Uses 1fps snapshot images for minimal bandwidth
Per-Camera Stream Selection
For fine-grained control, click the stream icon on any camera to choose:
- Auto - Automatically selects the best stream
- Primary (HQ) - High quality stream (higher bandwidth)
- Secondary (LQ) - Lower quality stream (lower bandwidth)
- Preview - 1fps images (minimal bandwidth)
Tip: If you're experiencing buffering, try switching to Preview mode or reduce your camera's bitrate settings to match your upload speed.
Scaling Mode
The Scaling toggle controls how video fits the display:
- Fit - Shows the entire frame with letterboxing if needed
- Fill - Fills the entire area, cropping edges if needed
Local Streaming
When your device is on the same network as your TetherBox, TetherX automatically streams directly from the TetherBox without going over the internet. This reduces latency and improves quality.
A coloured indicator in the top menu bar shows your connection status:
- Blue - Local streaming active (your device is on the same network as the TetherBox)
- Orange - External direct connection (streaming directly to TetherBox over internet)
Hover over the indicator to see which TetherBoxes are available for local or external streaming.
Local streaming is detected and enabled automatically - no configuration needed.
Note: Corporate firewalls may prevent local streaming even when on the same network.
PTZ Controls
For PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras, controls appear when you hover over the camera feed.
Movement Controls
- Directional arrows - Pan and tilt the camera
- Diagonal arrows - Move diagonally
- Centre button - Return to home position or start auto-patrol
Zoom Controls
- Zoom in (+) - Zoom into the scene
- Zoom out (-) - Zoom out for a wider view
Speed Control
Adjust the speed slider to control how quickly the camera responds to movement commands. Higher values mean faster movement.
Camera Presets
Many PTZ cameras have preset positions stored on the camera itself. Click the Presets dropdown to:
- View available presets
- Click any preset to move the camera to that position
- Click the refresh icon to reload presets from the camera
Relay Controls
If your camera has relay outputs (for triggering lights, doors, etc.), use the Relays dropdown to activate them.
Audio Challenge
For cameras with speakers, use Audio Challenge (Push to Talk) to speak through the camera. The microphone button appears on supported cameras.
Camera Streams
Most cameras have two RTSP streams:
- Primary stream - Highest resolution and frame rate, used for recording and fullscreen live view
- Secondary stream - Lower resolution, used for grid view and analytics
TetherX automatically selects the appropriate stream based on your layout and connection. In grid view with multiple cameras, the secondary stream is used to reduce bandwidth.
Troubleshooting
Buffering or stuttering video:
- Switch to Preview mode
- Reduce the number of cameras in your layout
- Check your internet connection speed
- Consider reducing camera bitrate settings
Camera feed shows error:
- Verify the camera is online (check the Cameras page)
- Ensure the TetherBox is connected
- Try refreshing the page
PTZ controls not responding:
- Verify the camera supports PTZ
- Check that no other user is controlling the camera
- Some cameras require a few seconds between commands
